Educational Specifications

At its meeting on Sept. 26, 2000, the School Committee approved a set of educational specifications for the building project as recommended by the Superintendent. The educational specifications define the spaces that need to be designed into the building. They don't define what the spaces will look like, merely how many rooms and their square footage.

On October 18, the School Committee revised the educational specifications.

There are two sets of specification, elementary, and middle school. The expectation for the elementary specifications is that they will be applied to each building as nearly equally as possible, given that Thoreau and Willard are carrying forward existing classroom and other spaces that may affect our ability to precisely match the prototype specifications.

A the middle school and willard, it is important to recognize that in applying the specifications to an existing building, the final result may also have some variability and the overall square footage of the final building may be different from that obtained simply by adding up the specified spaces.

For both sets of specifications, the gross square footage is obtained by multiplying the net square footage of the defined spaces by a multiplier to take into account hallways, stairwells, and other shared building spaces.
